We begin the liturgical season of Lent on Wednesday March 6th. Lent has two major purposes: it calls us to a deeper appreciation of our baptism promises and it emphasizes a spirit of penance. Through forty days of closer attention to God’s Word and of more fervent prayer, we are drawn to be closer to the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus.
We think of the social consequences of sin and renew our desire to turn from sin and to do the good which needs to be done. A Share Lent collection in the 5th week of Lent helps us to support the work of the Canadian bishops in developing countries.
Some special devotions during Lent help us to broaden and deepen our prayer experience. Stations of the Cross will be prayed on Friday and Wednesday in Lent after the 5:10 pm Mass, starting on Friday March 3rd.
Please ask the Holy Spirit to let you know what God wants you to do this Lent to make it special. On your part, plan some quiet time in the next few days to listen in a deeper way to the Holy Spirit speaking to you personally about Lent.
